Karen Lightowler has researched William North, showing that he lived from around 1819 until his death during the Great Flood in 1864. North was a member of the early Sheffield police force.
Historically, there are no official records of his death and burial, however his death was recorded by the Doncaster, Nottingham, and Lincoln Gazette. The papers reported how, due to the influx of deaths, North’s body had to be kept in a stable until he could be buried on the 17th March 1864 at Wardsend.
